Bernard Malamud  (1914/04/26 Brooklyn, New York – 1986/03/18) was a Jewish American author. He is perhaps most famous for his first novel The Natural , which was adapted into movie by Robert Redford but was just as respected for his short stories. Flannery O'Connor once wrote: " I have discovered a short-story writer who is better than any of them, including myself" in American Preface.

His achievement are numerous as he won 2 National Book Awards for Fiction for The Magic Barrel (1959), a collection of short stories, and The Fixer (1967), a full length novel. The Fixer also won the Pulitzer Prize that year. He was also awarded O'Henry Awards for Man in the Drawer (1967).

PEN has awarded PEN/Malamud Award Given annually since 1988 to honor Malamud's memory. The award recognizes excellence in the art of the short story.
