Bertrand Russel is one of the greates western philosopher of the 20th century. He won the Nobel Prize in LIterature in 1950 for recognition of his work. He won the prize, accordning to Nobel Prize website, "in recognition of his varied and significant writings in which he champions humanitarian ideals and freedom of thought". In his biography, he describes his ambition to "write one series of books on the philosophy of the sciences from pure mathematics to physiology, and another series of books on social questions. I hoped that the two series might ultimately meet in a synthesis at once scientific and practical".
