Charles Richard Johnson

Charles R. Johnson is an American writer who won the National Book Award for Fiction in 1990 for his novel Middle Passage.  Johnson, an African-American, has repeatedly addressed the black life in America. Interestingly, he first came to prominence not as a writer but as a political cartoonist in 1960's.
