Raised on a farm in upstate New York, Joyce Carol Oates started receiving praise for her writing at the young age of 19.  By her third novel, Oates had already begun to receive international recognition when she received the National Book Award for Fiction for her book them.

them was part of Oates' Wonderland Quartet which ended boldly with the novel Wonderland in 1971.  Just like the first two books of the Wonderland Quartet, Wonderland was also National Book Award finalist.

Throughout her life, Joyce Carol Oates has published 57 novels, 30 short-story collections and 8 volumes of poetry.

She has also published under pseudonyms Lauren Kelly and Rosamund Smith.
