World According to Garp was the 1980
National Book Award winning satirical novel by
John Irving. The book was a break through novel by Irving as it put him in the forefront of the literary success. It is a tale about a writer murdered by a disapproving reader. The story interweaves many of components found in Irving novels, such as bears, wrestling, Vienna, New England, and sexual infidelity. The Steering School in the story is based on his Phillips Exeter Academy which he attended.
